What is Kabosu?
Kabosu is a variety of citrus fruits. It's the same size as a tennis ball and weighs about 1/4 pound(100g〜120g). The fruit is a local specialty product of Oita Prefecture, Kyushu. The origin of kabosu is debatable. It's commonly said to have originated in China. The citrus was brought to Oita from Kyoto in
Edo period (from the early 17th century to the mid-19th century). It was only cultivated for captive
consumption in the region until its commercial production spread rapidly in 1960’s. Nowadays Oita is the biggest Kabosu producer in the world. It accounts for 98% of the total production. |
